Notts County Ladies FC Club History

Although this is a new chapter for Notts County Ladies, as they enter their inaugural season in the FA Women’s Super League, there have been chapters gone before them. The club was founded in 1977 by Bill Godward and his daughter Tina. It wasn’t an easy ride for the team who suffered relegation from the First Division within their first five years. However, the club remained strong, and despite just losing out on bouncing back to the First Division, the club travelled abroad to compete in a tournament in Holland in 1982. The competition was a success for the club, with the ladies finishing a highly respectable third among prestigious clubs of the time, Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

Unfortunately for Bill and his daughter Tina, after ten enjoyable years, the team folded.

The current incarnation of the club was formed in 1995, as Lincoln Ladies. The team finished runners-up in the Premier League Northern Division in four seasons, before seeing their bid to be part of the all-new WSL accepted, and they played in the league’s first season in 2011.

In the early part of 2013, it was announced that the team would move to Nottingham from the 2014 season – the rebrand proving necessary to meet new WSL requirements. It was a new era for the club, under the guidance of Notts County chairman Ray Trew. The move allowed the players to become full time, as well as having one of the biggest home stadiums and attendances of all WSL clubs.

Many players moved with the club from Lincoln to Notts, including Sophie Bradley, Jess Clarke, Amy Turner, and Sophie Walton. The club also announced the high profile signings of Desiree Scott, Carly Telford, and Ellen White for the inaugural Notts County WSL season.

2015 was the most successful season for the club so far, as the team reached both the FA Cup (played at Wembley for the first time) and Continental Cup finals, only to lose out to Chelsea and Arsenal respectively.
